It really wasn't that long ago that there was no texting. I guy had to ask for your phone number, call you, and ask to take you out or meet you. He had to move things forward in person. If the relationship is just texting, he could be married, have a girl friend, or be texting 10 other girls. All for sport or maybe to see who's the most open to having casual sex.

I'm not saying this is only a masculine exercise. I'm glad I experienced the dating scene where you are not expected to give so much information before you spend time with another person.

Another problem is all the info you have has been fed to you. For example, if they say they treat waitstaff with respect, that's one thing, but seeing them treat others with respect is a whole other thing.
